Anyone Can Whistle is beautifully bonkers and wonderfully absurd. The star of the show has to be the wonderful songs. Arts Review
With a highly acclaimed London revival in 2022, Anyone Can Whistle is an absurdist political satire set in dramatist Arthur Laurents’ imaginary town, bankrupted by corrupt Mayor Cora, whose gormless entourage conjure a fake miracle of water pouring from a rock. This is a fictional town where the government controls everything, even the miracles.
This fast-paced off-the-wall musical is as hilarious as it is subversive and nails truths about political liars. It feels current and daring in its treatment of what is considered ‘normal’ or ‘other’ in society.
This was Sondheim’s third collaboration with Laurents, who wrote the books for West Side Story and Gypsy. The musical score contains some of Sondheim’s most lyrical work and many of the songs have become Sondheim standards for reviews and concerts.
This non-professional production is presented by Music Theatre International. All authorised performance materials are also supplied by MTI.
