LIFE X 3
WED 17 – SAT 27 JAN 2024
MAIN HOUSE
By Yasmina Reza
Translated by Christopher Hampton
Directed by Sue Moore
“Yasmina Reza’s play is an elegant enigma with triple variations. Like many dramatists before her, Reza is fascinated by alternative possibilities and offers three perspectives on a single situation.
As an intellectual construct, the play is fascinating; Nothing is funnier on stage than to see supposedly decorous people behaving badly; if farce can be defined as the worst day of your life, then this is a mini-classic of the genre.”
Michael Billington, The Guardian
Yasmina Reza is one of the most successful playwrights of our time. Her insightful, witty writing and Christopher Hampton’s exquisite translation are a killer combination. The premiere of this play in the UK was at The National Theatre, with a stellar cast of Mark Rylance, Oliver Cotton, Imelda Staunton and Harriet Walter.
Henri and Sonia are putting their son to bed when Hubert and Ines arrive for dinner, a day earlier than expected … As the evening degenerates, Yasmina Reza’s play blends cruel observations with high comedy. We see three versions of the same socially hapless evening in which something changes subtly each time, providing a dramatically different outcome for each.
Sue Moore will direct her third Yasmina Reza play, following the highly acclaimed productions of ‘The God of Carnage’ and ‘Art’.
