REVIEW
“The play’s longevity must partly be explained by the fact that each staging seems less like the production of a play than the re-enactment of some primal ritual. Although the music and some of the references have been updated…..Bouncers survives because the urge to drink, fight and reproduce is never likely to go out of fashion. There is always a rush for tickets, or as in the words of the men in black, you’re not getting in.”  The Guardian

DIRECTOR’S NOTES ABOUT THE PLAY
John Godber, Yorkshire born playwright, updated his internationally acclaimed and award winning play Bouncers in 1991 to give us this version: Bouncers 1990s Remix. This play with Godber’s trademarks (breaking the 4th wall, choral speaking, tableaux, multi role playing) presents a thrilling opportunity for 4 male actors to transport us back to a 1990s Friday night clubbing session in THE club to be seen in – *Mr Cinder’s. It is outrageous as well as hilarious, a parody of the nightclub scene where 4 bouncers take us for a night on the town: girls dancing round their handbags; lads on the make (or the lash); punks and Hooray Henry’s. The excitement and anticipation of blowing your week’s wages on a Friday night, getting off with anyone who’ll have you and avoiding being bounced by the bouncers fuel both the pace and the passion of the play, with the violence or vulnerability which accompanies the various club culture cliques soulfully observed by our bouncers.
*Substitute the name of whatever club you can remember blagging your way into as a not quite 18 year old.

CHARACTERS
4 nightclub bouncers, multi role playing over 20 different female and male characters:
Lucky Eric – leader of the gang and a nervous breakdown waiting to happen
Judd – probably has no reflection, definitely meets the threshold of psychopath
Les – not a leader, not too bright, in fact his brain may only be painted on
Ralph – is he too sophisticated, too intelligent, too physically “un-bouncerly” to be a bouncer?
