‘BUBBLE FEVER’ BY DAVID FLETCHER

READING TO BE ARRANGED ON ZOOM

ANNOUNCING A NEW PLAY READING – ‘BUBBLE FEVER’ BY DAVID FLETCHER

I bring great news……..We are known to stage a good deal of premieres – world premieres no less – and David Fletcher has written a new play; one which we plan to stage in the Loft Studio.  As with all new writing, the play has now reached the stage where David would love to hear it read aloud by actors.  We should, under normal times, invite everyone who is interested to come to the theatre for a reading, but as we are in lockdown, we plan to do this by Zoom.

If you are interested in being part of this, please email David on davidfletcher@lofttheatrecompany.com by 15th June and we shall fix a date.

ABOUT THE PLAY

The play is called Bubble Fever and it marks the 300th anniversary of the UK’s first great stock market crash – the infamous South Sea Bubble of 1720. In the play, the Bubble is viewed through the eyes of Daniel Defoe. There is some original material but most of the play is based on the writings of Defoe – his pamphlets and extracts from the journals he edited. Defoe also wrote a lot about the plague at this time, and the resonances between health and economic crises are frighteningly relevant in our modern world. There are two central characters – Daniel Defoe and his adult daughter Hannah. The play also needs an ensemble company to play a wide range of fascinating and eccentric characters.

The play has been written as part of the association between the Loft Theatre, the University of Warwick, and the Warwick Words History Festival. The original plan was to perform the play in the Loft Studio and then revive it for one performance in Warwick during the Festival in November. We don’t yet have a clear plan B, for obvious reasons.
