“Has there ever been a better stage adaptation of a novel than this one by Christopher Hampton?”  This is writing to savour.

Michael Billington: The Guardian

In 1782, Choderlos de Laclos’ novel of sex, intrigue and betrayal in pre-revolutionary France scandalised the world.

Two hundred years later, Christopher Hampton’s irresistible adaptation swept the board, winning the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Play.

Former lovers, the Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont now compete in games of seduction and revenge. Merteuil incites Valmont to corrupt the innocent Cécile Volanges before her wedding night but Valmont has already targeted the peerlessly virtuous and beautiful Madame de Tourvel.

While these merciless aristocrats toy with others’ hearts and reputations, their own may prove more fragile than they supposed.

We shall have an open reading of this play on 6th June at 7.30 p.m.  All welcome.

The auditions will be on 23rd June at 2.30 p.m..

Here is a run down of the characters from the play.

La Marquise de Merteuil –   A widow. A powerful aristocrat, attractive, manipulative, bored, damaged

Mme de Volanges –   Cousin to Merteuil. Respectable. Also a widow. Well positioned in society. Mother of Cecile, wants a good match for her daughter

Cecile Volanges – Wide-eyed innocent embarking on the road of love and life.

Le Vicomte de Valmont – A charismatic libertine, Merteuil’s ex-lover, enjoys power struggles and deconstructing others’ lives, exudes confidence

Azolan – Valmont’s valet. Witty and mischievous.  Loves the good life.

Mme de Rosemonde – the matriarch, Valmont’s aunt. Knows everyone’s business. Delightful and warm

Mme to Tourvel – buttoned up, lives to a strict moral code, experiences her first taste of passion. Pious, but strong. Married to a senior politician

Emilie – a courtesan favoured by Valmont in idle moments, sultry and sassy. Great fun

Le Chevalier Danceny – amiable, handsome, morally strong, but easy prey for those stronger
